Male Superiority and Violence Against Women: A Study of the Character Tom in the Novel The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins
Keywords:
Male superiority, Patriarchy, Violence against womenAbstract
This Research examines men's superiority over women in the novel The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins through the character Tom's portrayal. This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method and the theory of patriarchal culture and gender injustice in patriarchal culture initiated by Retno Wulandari and Mansour Fakih. The research results show that there is private patriarchy in the character Tom which shows his power and dominance over women. women in the domestic and public spheres, namely Anna as his wife, Rachel as his ex-wife, and Meghan as his mistress. The power and dominance that Tom shows are how he becomes very temperamental and acts harshly as a result of the inappropriate conditions that Tom faces, namely that the women in his life want rights and rebel. One example of physical violence he commits is hitting women and an example of non-physical violence is verbal violence, so all this violence causes women to have trauma. This private patriarchy also gives rise to gender injustice in the form of physical violence committed by the character Tom.
